Brian in Singapore with python
In 2001, Jack and I spent three months traveling across Southeast Asia. Our journey took us through Singapore, Malaysian Borneo, Penang Island, mainland Malaysia, Thailand from south to north, and finally Hong Kong.
We traveled light, two men in our late 50s traveling like students: backpacks and youth hostels, public transportation, street food, and whatever came our way.
Yes, I birded along the way, but this series isn’t about the birds.
This is everything else: the culture, the food, the landscapes, the surprises, the mishaps, and the moments that made the trip unforgettable.
I recently found all the photos from that journey, and they brought back memories I haven’t thought about in years. The picture above, with a python in Singapore, is just one of them.
This new series, Travels with Brian & Jack, will unfold here on Adventuring with Ian & Brian. The birding stories from the same journey will appear later on Birding with Ian & Brian.
Thailand eventually became much more than a stop on the journey for Jack. He married there and lived there for many years before his death. With permission from his sons, I’ll be sharing photos of Jack, and of the two of us, throughout the series.
These stories are part adventure, part memory, and part tribute.
Coming soon.
